Ever feel trapped?

So had to start off with some super cute pics of Joanna kissing herself in the mirror doors of our bedroom.  He he he- too cute to resist!!!

Look who is eating the baby puff cereal things.  No idea what they are called, but they smell nice.  She LOVES them.  As in when we get them out she smiles real big and starts dancing :)

Here is what I really wanted to write about.  Do you ever have the feeling of being trapped?  I mean as in you thought you were going down the right path and just when you thought you had it figured out......well you end up like Joanna in the above pics.  You say to yourself how in the world did I end up here?  How does this happen?  I told myself that I wasn't going to do that again.  And you did......because- we are all human.

Sometimes this time of year feels like a trap.  I happen to LOVE CHRISTMAS!!!!!  I love the decorations, I love the candies, love the cookie making, love the lights, love the smells, and I don't even care that the stores are all filled long before most think about Christmas.....because in my heart that is when I get to really start thinking about Christmas.

BUT for many....and myself included.  We get trapped into thinking that things have to be just so.  Your cards have to be sent a minimum of 3 weeks before Christmas, your cards must have the perfect family picture in them, your cookies have to be perfect, your day has to be perfect, the time spent with relatives has to be perfect, your children have to act perfectly, and the list grows very LONG!!!  What happens when those things don't happen?  Well, we get disappointed and wait for the next Christmas to come along.  To try for yet another Perfect Christmas.

This can also be extremely hard for those who have lost family.  Because it can't possibly be perfect without them there.  It's true....it will never be the same.  Or for those without family......it is hard (and I am not just talking about orphans- but also those who do NOT have anyone and there are millions around us).

We face this constantly.  We have our family - yes.  BUT we rarely get to have family outside our 10 that are with us on Christmas due to distance.  So when you hear of everyone else you know having family over, grandparents, aunts, uncles, cousins......it is easy to feel disappointment.

Last year when we first found out that we might lose Naomi's referral- that CRUSHED our Christmas time.  We had very little hope that we would ever bring her home at that time.......and we were devastated.  Not a perfect Christmas.  The Christmas we were waiting for Andrew.......not a perfect Christmas because we were faced with the fact he may never get to come home to us.

BUT then there are the great Christmas' like when Andrew was home, and we brought home Matthew as well!  Or this Christmas when Joanna is with us!  Or when we got to fly out the day after Christmas to pick up Jonathan.  Or anytime you add more children- it adds more fun :)
I guess my point is that Christmas really isn't about what we are facing at that moment.  Christmas is TRULY about CHRIST coming into our lives.  About remembering the first time we were ADOPTED into HIS FAMILY!  About knowing that even though we face hard times, disappointing times, and literally "deep dark valley" times God has come to us.  Knowing what we need.  He doesn't leave us on Christmas day because our day didn't go perfectly.  He doesn't stop loving us because we are pouting about our tough time dealing with relatives.  He doesn't say that because we made some horrible decisions this year you are on your own.

INSTEAD GOD SAYS- I LOVE YOU!!!!    Please allow me into your life.  Give me your sins, your hurts, your sorrows.  Let me exchange those for JOY!  Yes, true JOY that only comes from a savior who came as a baby.  Born to a young mother & probably scared father who were flat broke and far from home.  Who had a pretty rough start considering the circumstances.  He did this to come as one of us- human.  To show us that although we are human and fail we can live free.   HOW?  Because this same perfect Christ DIED for you after being beaten with whips, mocked by everyone, abandoned by his closest friends to bring you FORGIVENESS!

John 3:16 "For God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son,  that whosoever believeth in Him should not perish, would have everlasting life."  Take a lesson from Joanna.  When you are in a trap and you can't get out.  Let your Daddy rescue you :)

International Adoption

So never got back to writing about the different "kinds" of adoption.  Oooppss...so here is my post about international adoption.  My post on domestic adoption is here.  My post on foster care is here.  And here is a post on open, semi open, closed adoptions.  And the above picture is our first real life meeting with our Jonathan.  Jonathan was born in Addis Ababa Ethiopia.  His referral came to us in September and we were able to meet him on December 27th, 2008.  He was 18 months old at that point.  It probably wouldn't have been as long except the fact that Ethiopian courts close for a couple of month each year, and they introduced a new government branch that all adoptions had to pass through.
There are many similarities with other forms of adoption- you need to start with a home study.  The paperwork that tells all about your family, the finances, the dimensions of your home, how you discipline, (maybe this should be a whole other post) etc.  BUT for international adoption you also have to have what is known as a dossier.  Yeah- that is in addition to your home study.  It is dependent on what country you adopt from what your dossier actually includes.  Sometimes extra verification that the right person has "stamped or sealed" your other paperwork.  Become close friends with a notary if at all possible!!!!

Like I said some of it is just a duplicate of what you need for your homestudy, but some of it are things like a letter of reason that you want to adopt from xyz country, power of attorney, obligations to post adoption reporting, more financial statements, pictures of specific things in your home, of your family, etc.  Then there is your USCIS (United States Citizenship & Immigration Service) 1-600A form which is what you will need to bring your child back home with you.  You have to send in a copy of your homestudy, birth certs, marriage cert, letter to the USCIS stating what you are wanting to do, along with a nice big check so that they can schedule you for.....yes another set of fingerprints.

Then you wait until you have your USCIS clearance in order to to get your Favorable Determination Letter- that letter says you are ok to bring home a sibling group under the age of 10, or 1 child under the age of 2, or whatever you have put as your parameters.  :)
Usually there are court dates, and Embassy dates involved as well.  These are important to make sure the child is legally placed for adoption, all of your paperwork is in order, etc.  Sometimes you are not in the country for these things and a representative from the adoption agency is there "for you".  Some countries require 1 trip, 2 trips, and for varying times for each.  Sometimes you have to stay a week or less and sometimes you have to be there a month or more.

One of the harder things about international adoption is that it is not always stable.  Other countries have different rules, and sometimes change those rules as they go.  This can be scary, but as our agency said if you listened to all the rumors no one would ever bring these children that need homes- HOME!  Which leads me to the number one reason people adopt internationally.....because there is a real need!  Most of these children are not just sort of going without.....most DIE!  This is a reality.  We can close our eyes, and make assumptions, and say well it happens, but it doesn't change that fact that 1,000's of children DIE EVERY YEAR!!!!  FACT!
International adoption is usually not for babies that are days or weeks old because usually by the time you bring them home they are at least 6 months- 1 year old.  Some countries they do not allow children to be adopted until they are older.

You may not know anything about the birth family at all.  Now I know maybe that doesn't seem like a big deal to you, but let that sink in......NOTHING about their past.  You may not know about medical past, abuse history, or anything of that nature at all.  We were fortunate enough to get to meet Jonathan's birth family, but MOST do not- ever!
Some people can't wrap their mind around the semi-open and open adoptions.  In which case international adoption is a good choice.

International adoptions usually don't "fail" (unless the country changes the rules).  Birth families are far less likely to change their minds because the realities are far different than here in the US.  Now yes....there are exceptions, but they are pretty rare!

You don't wait to be "picked" by a birth family.  So you pretty much are "in line" to get the next available child with in your parameters.  So if you want a girl or boy age 0-18 months....once you have worked your way up the line your agency has when you are at the top spot the next child available is yours.  Unless you turn down a referral for some reason - (usually the biggest being medical issues that some don't feel comfortable with).
You can also adopt sibling groups.  Which cost wise is cheaper, and there are usually always sibling groups available.  Some programs you can also adopt 2 unrelated children at a time making it cheaper per child.  The average costs of international adoptions between $20,000-40,000 including airfare, cost of staying there, agency fees, etc.
One thing I wanted to talk a little about today is that some people are under the impression that international adoption is somehow "less" important.  They argue that there are children that need help here- TRUE.  However I would like to point out that God commands us to help our neighbors.  In scriptures when the Good Samaritan story is talked about one of the themes is the question of "who is our neighbor"- answer- EVERYONE!  I totally know there is a need here, see it, have heard the stories about it, and yet......have also heard the stories about the needs of other countries and see that too!

This is totally my opinion of course, but saying that we should only do domestic/foster care adoption is like saying we should only do ministry here in the US and not anywhere else.  BOTH are NEEDED!  BOTH are NECESSARY!  BOTH are WONDERFUL!!!
If you want to know how it feels.....to us it was much like the other adoptions we had done.  Jonathan doesn't feel like he is different because he happened to be born in Ethiopia.  He had malnourishment in his past.  His bone structure identifies him as being from Ethiopia.  BUT GOD says - he is your son and I have chosen your family to care for him.
So just as with any other adoption.....there are papercuts to be had, there are technicalities that exist, rules to follow, and money to raise.......BUT there are lives that change- mostly our own.
If you have any other questions....let me know.  I would love to try to answer them- or at least find out the answers for you :)

Our weaknesses

2 Corinthians 12:9-10 "But He said to me, 'My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.'  Therefore I will boast all the more gladly about my weaknesses, so that Christ's power may rest on me.  That is why, for Christ's sake, I delight in weaknesses, in insults, in hardships, in persecutions, in difficulties.  For when I am weak, then I am strong."

This scripture- seems so strange at times.  These are the verses we have worked on the last week with our kids to memorize.  We memorize scripture with the kids for school.  When we first started I was like ok yeah have heard this scripture before...

Well....little did I know that God had plans to show me what it meant.  You know God likes to do things like that.  There has been a real "test" going on in our home.  For ME that is.  You see I like to have all my ducks in a row.  Just the way I am...which is good sometimes, and well not for other times.  I don't like being weak.  I don't cry unless it is a deep hurt.  I don't like people pointing out my downfalls- who does, but when it comes down to it.  I am weak....much more than I know or admit.
BUT the great part about being weak is that it is then God's power rests on me.  WHAT??  Yeah- scroll back up and read that again.  It is when we are weak - and BOAST about being weak that God's power rests on us!!!!  Not only that we are to DELIGHT in weaknesses, insults, hardships, persecutions, & difficulties.  WHAT  - really???  YES!!!  Why?  Because from personal experience (I am sure we have all had these).....when we can't do it- it is then HE CAN!  How easily I forget and try once again to put my ducks in a row and "show off" how wonderfully I can do it.....and then it hits like a brick- Back OFF!  You can't do this.......but God says "I WILL".

So for those of you out there who "feel" weak, or inadequate, or doubtful of what is going on with people who seem to persecute you and insult you, give it to God....because my friends it is NOW in these times that God's Power is resting on you.  Soak it in....know it is holding you....and know that God's Power does NOT FAIL EVER!!!
Now for my personal proof of what God can do.......my beauty who was thinking that holding daddy's Mt. Dew can was funny.
Yes....she is trying to lick the can........
And when she realized everyone was looking at her- her cute cheeky face comes alive :)

May God's Power rest on you today my friends!

Triplets & Happy 9th Birthday Andrew!!

Am I having triplets?  No, although I would never turn that down- that would be great :)
No...these are my triplets...well almost.  They were all born within a year....in 2 states....and would later through God's grace become fun loving brothers!  For one week every year (which this pic was taken this past week) they are all the same age!  How's that for fun?  I love it too when people ask me the question - are they all brothers and sisters?....our reply is yes....and then we say the ages....yeah- you should see the looks I get ;)
Andrew still trying to wake up on his Birthday.
Opening his cards....and his eyes start to wake up as money falls out of the card- he he he
Then he is really awake by the time he sees his knights and horses set!!!  WAHOOOO!!!!!
 Now for some fun....
Everyone getting in on the action....
But I tell you what- this - THIS was AMAZING banana cream pie.  It was a last minute decision by Andrew and let me tell you- Jason had never done one, but WOW!!!  Unfortunately it is all gone already (sometimes a bummer of having a large family).  SOO YUMMYYY!!!
Today I started remembering the day he was born.  We were over the moon EXCITED!!!!!  He was supposed to be coming home with us....right then..............and well as a lot of things in the foster care system....not so much.  We ended up waiting 7 whole weeks to finally bring him home.  A story I have shared a little of before.  Due to circumstances...the broken system...etc.  He didn't spend that time with his birth mom, but at another foster home.  I just knew they couldn't love him the way we already did!

I mean when his birth mom knew she was pregnant and the social workers spoke to her....she requested he come to be in the same home as Abigail.  She knew we would be kind to her, and love her baby boy.  And yet we ended up waiting FOREVER!!!!!!  I can't explain how much that HURT us.  I mean literally tore our hearts out day after agonizing day.....during the holiday season.....if it weren't for Abigail being sooo adorable- I think we would have sunk even lower.

This was the first time I had ever experienced depression of any kind.  IT HURT!

PRAISE GOD!!!!  That he did come to us though.....and although I would NEVER CHOOSE to wait.  I am sooo very very very very very very GLAD he is my son.  He is so handsome.  He has the most cute smile with a hint of cheekiness.  He has compassion.  His heart is big!  He wants to still be a policeman when he grows up to help others and protect others.  That pretty much says it all.  He has a strong will as well and for some reason Jason says he acts a lot like me????  No idea what he is saying???  Hmmmm......  All I know is that I PRAISE GOD that Andrew James Wright was born.  That he was given the chance to live...and that we were given the opportunity to be his parents.

I can't say enough, but I will stop there.  Because now I must go hang out with my hubby for a while since the kids just went to bed :)  Have a great day!!!  God Bless :)

TIME

Now who could resist when you have a lot of balloons and you have just learned about static electricity......to have a little fun with it.  If you are Joshua you take time to decorate the ceiling!
Who could resist these cute cheeks.....if you are daddy you take time to breathe in the cuteness of your child.
If you are Jonathan and love your new kitten you take time to play with him......
If you are a mommy you take time to feed you littles...
Even if they make faces like this.  Just kidding....actually she makes this face every time she eats - especially something new.

At a time of the year when our time is taken with finding the perfect gift for everyone on our "list", and we have to clean the house for guests, put up all the decorations, bake the cookies, make the special dishes, and soooo many other things that are happening.....

We have to be extra careful to take TIME for those we love- all year long!  Today I took a mile long walk with each of our children separately.  It was simple.....just took some time.  BUT today I got to have conversation- uninterrupted (which is a big deal in our home) with each of our children.  Now I do take time with each of our children, but it is easily interrupted, or a teaching time (since we homeschool), or sometimes it just doesn't seem like enough.

Just like anything worth anything- it takes time!  Our relationship with God - TAKES TIME, our relationship with a spouse - TAKES TIME, our relationship with our children - TAKES TIME!!!  Each of these things are soo important to me.  Sometimes I forget that I have to work at those relationships.  Sometimes I take it for granted that they are always around me and I forget that I want to listen to them.  Today we read about Bethan Lloyd-Jones...she was a wife of a preacher in England and was always available to people to listen and share the gospel (from the book 10 Girls Who Made A Difference).

I am so glad that I took that time.  So are my children because they have talked to me about it afterwards.  Daddy also took time with each of them today to make our Sand Dollar ornaments.  We had gotten Sand Dollars in Florida and he took time to decorate them with the kids.

You know it really is great to hear them- I mean really hear them.  To study them.  To know what they like or don't like.  To listen to questions they have.  To hold their hands, and look into their eyes.

I would encourage you to put time and effort into your most important relationships this season.....and year long.  It DOES NOT take money- it DOES take TIME!!!!  Your kids will not probably remember the "perfect gift" you gave them, but they will remember the time you spent listening to them, talking with them, and getting to know them, teaching them, and just sharing with them about who you are.

Finally Matthew's 8th Birthday and Christmas decorating at the Wrights

So I paid the $5 a year and said - HELLO pictures!!!!  So enjoy the costly splurge- he he he!!!  Here we are in pj's and all opening up presents for Matthew's 8th Birthday which was on the 27th of November!!!
 Love it :)
Rip, rip....books (a traditional gift our kids always get on birthdays and adoption days) :)
Iron Man stuff and a spy net voice changer- he was THRILLED!!!
Testing his voice changer as I was figuring out the Iron Man car, person, thing :)
Daddy should be on cake boss, but instead he chooses to be here :)  awwwww....thanks daddy!
Like the Matthew as spiderman card he got from his English grandma (who loves to do computer things) hanging out in the corner?  Love this race track!
Great news Matthew you are 8 today!!!!  And the best part is - WE LOVE YOU!!!!!!!!!!!  Happy Birthday!
So we had the privilege of seeing you on the day you were born.  You were born on your birth mom's birthday and you share that with her.  Very special.  You were sooo tiny- less than 6lbs.  We remember your wee little body in that huge carseat as we took you to our home a couple of days later.
Now you are a handsome, funny, inquisitive, messy little boy who has stolen our hearts for good!  A little over a year later we got to finalize the adoption....and when the judge asked do you want this child?- YES!!!!!!!!!  was our answer......  Matthew Joseph Wright you are our little man whom we adore!  Thank you for bringing so much joy and laughter into our lives.
So later that day.....Jason said while the little littles were sleeping.....team challenge kids put up the tree.  This is what happened.
They did great!  Little arguments....few too many chiefs, but overall they did great!
Yeah- we need an expansion on the mantle???  Not really big enough for 10 stockings.  Our kids all have snowmen on their stockings and Jason has to put Joanna's name on hers yet.
After they were done.....they were dancing to some Nicole C. Mullen- 365 Days.....love this song!
And the kids are entertaining :)
And you know whenever you have balloons you have to do the balloon game.  You know the one where you have to try to keep it up off the ground for as long as possible!  :)

So there you finally have it....and I will be updating soon again..........
for right now gotta go Jason & I are going out for a few hours :)  You know mostly just doing shopping, but hey, we take any alone time we can get.  Our family can't be a family if mommy & daddy are not on the same page!
